Group Beginning Piano Classes

There are up to three levels of Group Beginning Piano, depending on interest, all for students aged 8 to 18.
Length - one semester
Class Size - 5 (min.) to 10 (max.)

Group Beginning Piano Testup and Audition Requirements

There are currently no testup requirements for piano classes, although the class teacher may determine a student needs to repeat a level before moving up.

Group Beginning Piano Prerequisites

Our group beginning piano classes are NOT meant to replace private lessons! If you are already taking private lessons in piano, you should not sign up for these group classes. 


The group piano classes are meant to be a brand new introduction to playing the piano. FAYM only offers up to three levels of piano. When a student has completed the offered levels of FAYM piano classes, if the student wants to continue the study of piano, he/she should seek out a private instructor for continuing study.

Ages - 8 to 18
No previous musical experience required, and no previous piano experience allowed to enroll in level 1
Enrollment in level 2 requires completion of level 1
Enrollment in level 3 requires completion of level 2


Group Beginning Piano Class Descriptions

Beginning Piano 1


This class is for students who have NOT previously taken lessons in piano. Students with previous piano experience should not enroll in this class. Students will be introduced to the BASICS of piano playing, including key names, fingering, the playing of both hands alone and together, and basic music notation. Students will also experience ensemble playing.


This class is not meant to be a comprehensive piano course. The goal of this class is to introduce the student to music through the piano. At the completion of this course, students can choose to pursue piano further through private lessons, or to continue their study of music through a different instrument.


Homework: daily practice of class assignments


Required Book:  Students must purchase the Faber Piano Adventures Lesson Book, Primer Level, 2nd edition.


Materials required: class book, pencil; piano, digital piano, or keyboard with full-size keys at home for practice - students do NOT need to bring their keyboard to class.




Beginning Piano 2


The level 2 class will pick up where level 1 left off, continuing playing both hands together, reading notes in both clefs, and learning to read and count more complex rhythms. This class is not meant to be a comprehensive piano course. The goal of this class is to introduce the student to music through the piano. At the completion of this course, students can choose to pursue piano further through private lessons, or to continue their study of music through a different instrument.
